Highland Cycling Strategy Launched At Inverness City Train Station
Today nearly 50 delegates at a special meeting of the Highland Cycle Forum and a group of twenty international cyclists who are on the opening ride of the North Sea Cycle Route will launch the new Highland Cycling Strategy.
The group of cyclists, some of who started in Hamburg on 5th May, have travelled through Shetland, Orkney, Caithness, Sutherland, and Ross & Cromarty on their way to the opening celebrations of the North Sea Cycle Route in Aberdeen on Saturday 23rd June.
The Strategy launch meeting is being held at the Royal Highland Hotel next to Inverness City train station and delegates will hear Highland Council Road Safety Officer, Cathie Way, present the background to the development of Safer Routes to School initiatives and will update the meeting on the recent announcements of £555k funding over the next three years to Highland Council. Speakers will talk about the cycling tourism benefits of the ‘Coast to Coast’ cycle route (England) and the Great Glen Cycle Route between Inverness and Fort William. The meeting will hear speakers on cycle training and cycling to work who will highlight the health, environment, recreation and transport benefits of promoting cycling.
Councillor Sandy Mackenzie, Chairman of Highland Cycle Forum said "The Highland Cycling Strategy recognises the important role that cycling has for integrated transport and tourism. The important link between the North Sea Cycle Route and train stations is emphasised at today’s meeting at Station Square, Inverness".
