Cycling Tourism Project Starts 50 Day Count-Down

The Highland Council and partners are supporting cycling tourism with two major initiatives during Cycling Festival 2001.

The trans-national North Sea Cycle Route project will involve two cycle rides, travelling on the northern and southern arcs through seven European countries.

The northern arc ride will be passing through Highland towns and communities along the route. The riders will arrive in John O’Groats on Friday 15 June and will follow National Cycle Network Route 1 to Inverness and then on to Aberdeen for arrival on 25 June.

The second initiative during Cycling Festival 2001 is the launch of the new Highland Cycling Strategy at the Highland Cycle Forum meeting being held in Inverness on Tuesday 19 June. The Highland Cycle Forum meeting will be hearing speakers on cycling tourism, the Great Glen Cycle Route, employer benefits of cycling and other topics. The Forum members will meet the North Sea Cycle Route riders when they arrive in Inverness.

Councillor Sandy Mackenzie, Chairman of Highland Cycle Forum said:s " This is a very important year for Cycling Tourism and Highland Cycle Forum is launching the new strategy that will enable all partners and others to focus their efforts to fulfil the potential of the Highlands as the best place to cycle."

The vice-chairman of Highland Cycle Forum Mr Ged Church said: "Improved facilities for commuter cyclists will also benefit recreational cycling and the new Highland Cycling Strategy is an opportunity to expand the network of cycle routes across the Highlands."
