Viking Route Is Now Biking Route!

York's role in turning northern Europe's ancient Viking route into an impressive new 6000km Biking route will be celebrated this week with the visit of two North Sea invaders on Wednesday (June 6). Working with cycling groups City of York Council has helped make the city a key destination in the new long-distance North Sea Cycle Route which opens this summer. From this month the city's cyclists will be able to reach seven European countries along several thousand miles of dedicated cycle paths. And to celebrate, two cyclists from Germany - Hamburg's Michael Zaubitzer and Horst Radmner from Wilhelmshaven – are cycling all the way from Hamburg and will reach York on Wednesday before heading for Aberdeen. The committed cyclists will be joined by local cyclists en route and Britain’s top cycling city is set to give them a warm welcome at a special reception, attended by council officers. James Harrison, City of York Council’s cycling officer welcomed the new route. He said, "Whilst York is in investing in a comprehensive network to make local journeys by cycle possible for more people it is also pleasing to know that our work is contributing to a much larger strategy to make cycling possible anywhere in northern Europe.” John Grimshaw, Director of Sustrans - the national engineering charity responsible for building cycle routes across Britain - also welcomed the new international initiative. He said, "This extraordinary route is an indication of all our determination to create a sustainable future. The North Sea Cycle Route makes use of parts of the National Cycle Network, which was opened last year after a huge effort by Sustrans and its many partners. You can visit this vast area by bike. For each of us the North Sea Cycle Route gives the opportunity to travel far, but with a light impact on the local environment and communities". The project is funded by the European Union, through the Interreg IIC programme, and over sixty local authorities. The North Sea Cycle Route links Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands, England and Scotland.
